GENITAL CANDIDIASIS/ YEAST INFECTION

This is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge, itchiness of the vagina and vulva. It is not considered a sexually transmitted infection but can spread through oral- genital contact. Three out of four adult women will get at least one yeast infection during their lifetime. This infection also affects men but it is less common.

CAUSES

Yeasts are generally present in healthy humans especially on the skin, mouth and vagina. A disruption in the normal balance in the body leads to an overgrowth.

This overgrowth can result from:

*Abuse of antibiotic use

*Pregnancy

*Uncontrolled diabetes

*Oral contraceptives that increases estrogen

*Impaired immune system.

SYMPTOMS

*Itching and irritation in the vagina

*Burning sensation while urinating and with intercourse

*Redness and swelling of the vulva

*Vaginal pain and soreness

*Thick, white (cheesy appearance), odour-free vaginal discharge.

*Watery vaginal discharge.

PREVENTION

*Avoid douching which removes normal bacteria in the vagina.

*Avoid excessive scented feminine products e.g. bubble bath and hot baths.

*Avoid staying in wet clothes e.g. swimsuit for a long period of time.

*Wash underwear at a higher temperature.

*Eat healthy diet.
