CHLAMYDIA

It is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. The infection spreads easily because it often produces no symptoms and also easily transmissible to sexual partners without knowing. If left untreated, it can lead to sexual complications.

CAUSES

  • Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect several organs including the penis, vagina, cervix, urethra, anus, eye and throat, through unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex.
  • Pregnant women can also transfer it to their unborn children during delivery.

Symptoms:

Most people do not notice any symptoms, only around 10% of males and 5 – 30% of females experience symptoms. Symptoms occur within 1 – 3 weeks after contact.

In females:

  • Abnormal virginal discharge that may have an odour.
  • Bleeding between periods.
  • Painful periods.
  • Abdominal pain with fever.
  • Itching or burning in or around the vaginal.
  • Painful urination.

In males:

  • Clear or cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis.
  • Painful urination.
  • Burning or itching around the opening of the penis.
  • Pain and swelling around the testicles.

Others include ( for both male and female)

  • Anal discharge and discomfort.
  • Eyes: redness, pain and discharge especially in children.

Complications:

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease ( PID): This occurs if Chlamydia spreads to the uterus and fallopian tubes, which can affect fertility.
  • Premature births
  • Eye infections, blindness to the newborn.

Prevention:

  • Using protection (condoms) consistently.
  • Limit the number of sexual partners.
  • Regular screening.
  • Avoid douching.
