Folliculitis
It is a common skin condition in which there is an inflammation or infection of one or more hair follicles. This commonly occurs on the scalps, thighs, buttocks, neck and armpits (places where friction is common).
Causes:
It is caused by infection of the hair follicles with staphylococcus aureus bacteria. It can also be caused by viruses and fungi.
Risk factors:
- Having conditions that reduces resistance to infections e.g diabetes, HIV/AIDS.
- Acne/Dermatitis.
- Long term antibiotic therapy/Steroid use.
- Causing damage to hair follicles by shaving, waxing or wearing tight clothing.
Symptoms:
- Itchy burning skin.
- Clusters of red small bumps/white headed pimples that develop around the hair follicles.
- Pus- filled with blisters that break open and crust.
- Painful tender skin.
Prevention:
- Avoid tight clothes which helps reduce friction.
- Shave less frequently and wash with warm water and antibacterial soap.
- Use lotions that do not clog the the skin
- Avoid sharing personal care such as razors, towel etc.
- Shower after heavy sweating.
